Hinksey Park is a public park and leisure destination located off Abingdon Road, roughly a 15-minute walk or cycle from the centre of Oxford. Laid out in the 1930s on the site of the former Oxford Waterworks, the park has since become a community focal point for sport, recreation, and wildlife. It is easily reached on foot, by bike via the No. 5 cycle route, or by bus, with parking available off Abingdon Road. The park has four hard tennis courts available on a pay and play basis, with online booking recommended to guarantee availability. Courts have been newly resurfaced and are bookable by mobile, tablet, or computer. Coaching is available, and night lighting is in place. Alongside tennis, the park offers outdoor swimming (seasonal), table tennis, a sports field, model boating, fishing, and cycling. The park's character is shaped by its avenues of Giant Redwood and Pine trees, a lake, pond, and stream running along the car park edge. It functions as a wildlife habitat supporting amphibians, bats, waterfowl, and small mammals - giving the site a noticeably green and natural feel unusual for a park so close to a city centre.
