About Us
Woodford Tennis Club (WTC) is a historically Black tennis club established in 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded by working-class members during the Civil Rights Movement, the club was created as an independent space for the community to pursue tennis and fitness without waiting for inclusion elsewhere. Today it operates as a members-only facility with over 170 active members.
The club offers five tennis courts - three clay and two hard courts equipped with night lighting - along with a clubhouse lounge, catering kitchen, and secure on-site parking. WTC is recognized by both the ATA and USTA and employs three tennis professionals. Beyond tennis, the club hosts clinics for all skill levels, individual and group lessons, youth summer camps, and annual tournament competitions. The facility also serves as an event space for celebrations and gatherings.
WTC emphasizes community through both athletics and social connection. Members participate in activities including biking and bowling, and the club collaborates with local organizations, youth groups, and the City of Philadelphia to promote tennis as a healthy activity. The club hosts social events like jazz brunches and tournament viewings.
