Proficiency at tennis is a requirement for full playing and voting membership. The club has a notably informal character with an emphasis on social play alongside competitive tennis. Its history includes a colourful wartime period when an anti-aircraft gun was stationed on one of the courts - a fact that, in keeping with the club's traditions, did not entirely stop members from playing.
